Twitter  battle against disinformation intensifies

Micro-blogging website Twitter is all set to fight against the disinformation.

The social media giant Twitter will debunk the disinformation present on its website with the aid of the two international news providers Reuters and Associated Press (AP) according to BBC.

The sole purpose here is to authenticate the information circulating on the website. As recently, the pressure was mounting on the giant to remove false and misleading content and information.Eventually, leading towards the propagation of untrue news, details and facts.

What is the role of News agencies?

It is for the very first time that Twitter has collaborated with the news organisations to promote  accurate and true information. These news agencies will give more context on events  to counteract the spread of misinformation.

What Twitter has to say?

Twitter is terming this as the step that can ensure the spread of credible information to be immediately available “when facts are in dispute”.

“Rather than waiting until something goes viral, Twitter will contextualize developing discourse at pace with or in anticipation of the public conversation.”

Furthermore the giant also said:

The two news agencies Reuters and AP would improve information credibility on the platform when Twitter’s Curation team “doesn’t have the specific expertise or access to a high enough volume of reputable reporting on Twitter”.

Previous efforts of Twitter:

Twitter this year has also launched the Birdwatch via which the volunteers  could label the tweets that they found inappropriate or source of spreading violence.

Many people are appreciating the move meanwhile some people are still worried about the trolling which takes place on Twitter because of this spread of disinformation.

Some people are also blaming Twitter as part of the problem.

Meanwhile the famous BBC Journalist Shayan Sardarizadeh investigating online disinformation also took to Twitter to announce the move.

This is a commendable step. Yet Twitter has to make more effort to fight this war.

The social media giant has to upgrade its technologies which are fast enough  in catching and blocking tweets and accounts which spread hate speech and violence.

Keeping in mind that the  Freedom of information and expression should not be compromised.
