Tik Tok shared new features to support the mental health of users.

TikTok shared the slew of features to aid the users struggling with mental health issues like suicide etc. This includes a search intervention feature that will direct the users to support resources when they look up phrases such as #suicide and there is also a well-being guide for those struggling with eating disorders.

TikTok’s new announcement regarding this feature comes at the time when its competitor Instagram is facing criticism in relation to research that points out that the Instagram application might have harmful effects on teenagers’ mental health in certain situations.

TikTok in regards to its feature said:

“While we don’t allow content that promotes, glorifies, or normalizes suicide, self-harm, or eating disorders. We do support people who choose to share their experiences to raise awareness, help others who might be struggling and find support among our community.”

All in all TikTok’s timing for the release of the new feature is amazing as last week was National Suicide Prevention Week. In 2019, the Facebook documents did show the lethal effects of Instagram on the mental health of teenagers as per the report of  Wall Street.

However, TikTok’s new feature will direct the users to support if they search some crisis text line like suicide, etc. Tik Tok, the Chinese photo and video sharing application has proved to be a great competitor of Instagram. Instagram however in order to beat TikTok has enhanced its features like selection of audience during the live stream and displaying more visible search results
