Vaccine Passport Technology is Raising Security and Privacy Concerns
Cybersecurity experts have serious concerns about privacy and security loopholes in vaccine passport technology.
You might have heard about digital vaccine passports. These passports contain digital proof that an individual has taken the vaccine. Recently, many countries including the US, UK, and Canada are considering coronavirus travel passports. Though the leaders of these countries have shown their concerns and reluctance due to discrimination issues. According to a news report on vaccine passport in Canada by CBC:
“Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said today he’s reluctant to introduce a system of vaccine passports to show proof of immunization because of lingering concerns about inequities — but such a system might be necessary for international travel.”
People have multiple viewpoints on the use of vaccine passport technology. Even the vaccine passport for international travel is branded discriminatory by many.
However, the US administration has already taken the initiative to develop covid vaccine travel passport tech. According to Washington Post:
“The Biden administration and private companies are working to develop a standard way of handling credentials. This tech is often referred to as vaccine passports. These would allow Americans to prove they have been vaccinated against the novel coronavirus as businesses try to reopen.”
Vaccine Passport Technology and Security/Privacy Issues
The development of vaccine health passports is raising huge concerns in the areas of security and privacy. According to Telegraph:
“But in the race to create passports app, experts warn we could be placing our privacy and security at risk. ‘Although it supplies a short-term fix, the long-term issues are potentially dangerous. Unless they are fully looked after now’ warns Jake Moore, a cybersecurity specialist at ESET.”
The precious private and personal information of a huge population will become prone to hacking attempts and privacy violations due to flawed apps.
The developers of vaccine passports must design a privacy regulation complaint strategy and apply secure coding methodologies to ensure defense against security breaches and privacy attacks.
