Business and Productivity App Downloads Hit 7.1 billion in 2020 – Up 35% in a Year

According to mobile market data and analytics by App Anniethe number of business and productivity apps downloads reached 7.1 billion in 2020 – that’s a 35% increase from 2019. The growth in app usage was fueled by social distancing and lockdown measures. 

The frequency of downloads started increasing in mid-March last year when the pandemic hit and the entire business operations had to be shifted online. During this time, employees world-wide were restricted from working from office and had to come up with effective ways of collaborating from home. 

Though the highest numbers recorded for global downloads of business and productivity apps was in April and May, the frequency remained notably high throughout the rest of the year as well.

App download charts dominated by video conferencing apps in 2020

The pandemic situation did not only impact the volume of downloads. Surprisingly, there was also a significant change in the ‘type of apps’ people downloaded. Back in 2019, the mobile app chart was topped by social connectivity apps such as WhatsApp, Messenger and Gmail. However, in 2020, the three apps that dominated the download charts were: Zoom cloud meetings, Microsoft teams and Google Meet.  

With work from home and social distancing policies implemented, the increase in the demand for video conferencing apps, for both; personal and business use, was quite expected.

In January 2020, Zoom was being used by 10 million participants daily. By March 2020, this figure had risen to 200 million daily users. 

 Adobe reached #14 in the 2020 chart with its Adobe Acrobat Reader app. 

While top publishers indeed mirrored top apps — Zoom Cloud Meetings, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams — Adobe rounded out the top 4 publishers with the largest download footprint of Business and Productivity apps in 2020 due to longstanding success in its desktop-turned mobile document cloud apps. 

Further, research from the The state of mobile 2021  revealed that consumers spent £105bn on mobile apps in 2020– a 20% increase from 2019. Top markets driving these numbers included China, the US, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom.
