How to Develop eCommerce Websites with Shopify

This article will tell you how Shopify development can enhance the business?

Specifically, it will discuss how to build your online store with Shopify development!

Let’s get started!

How to Develop eCommerce Websites with Shopify

Most of you might not be aware of the fact that Shopify Development Company was launched by a group of snowboarders. Yes! You heard that right! Those guys were trying to sell some snowboarding equipment. Unable to find a suitable platform, they decided to create one. Luckily, one of those guys had development skills, so he started with a basic version.

The rest of the story is history!

Today, Shopify is a renowned name for the creation of user-friendly and safe web places for businesses all around the world.

Most people think that Shopify development took advantage of its own language to build a Shopify app, (as commonly done with desktop and smartphone apps). Sorry to disappoint you but that is not true. Connecting you to a Shopify store, a Shopify app is a simple web application. It works like any other web application, making it possible for you to write in various languages on different stacks.

There is just one difference though: On the Shopify app, you can get access to the admin API of Shopify (cool, no?)

What Can Shopify Development Do for Your Business?

Every business has different requirements that companies like Shopify cater to while outsourcing eCommerce website development. Shopify developers make sure that your eCommerce store is tailored according to your needs. Not only this, the services include guidance in understanding the usage of different tools that are new to you, as well as a detailed review of the Shopify app development services (just in case you need an app too!).

But if your business is in the start-up phase, you might also be considering using some do-it-yourself type of Shopify development services. Great! You will probably want to invest those bucks in your business initially. Let’s have a look at the Shopify website development features to help you make a decision!

Why Shopify?

After you sign up for a Shopify account, you will come across lots of options to choose from. Here’s a quick review of the things you can do by yourself (with the help of this step-by-step guide, of course!).

You can:

  • Develop your website
  • Select a design as per your requirements
  • Give a unique name and choose a domain for your website
  • Upload product details (pricing, size, etc.,)
  • Receive orders from customers
  • Select from various available payment options (PayPal, etc.,)
  • Offer discounts, conduct online sales and promote your products.

If you have come across other options for your eCommerce website designing, you must have noticed that Shopify development services offer you the most affordable choices (way cheaper than hiring a professional developer to do it for you). In the long run, due to its feature that lets software upgrade itself on its own, it is quite reliable. And if you have an issue even then, they have great customer support services to depend on.

How to Use Shopify Development to Build Your Online Store: A Step by Step Guide

So, if you have decided upon the option of using the do-it-yourself option from the Shopify web development company, let me tell you that you have made a good choice. Now I am going to share with you a step-by-step guide on how to build your webstore, and that too all by yourself!

Step 1: Sign Up

Okay, so let’s begin with the easiest task: Sign up! Shopify requires you to sign up with an account to start building your online empire!

All you have to do is visit their website, and hit the Get Started button. Enter your email, a strong password, and the name of your store. Keep in mind: You need to choose an exclusive name for your website. Shopify does not allow purchasing of a domain if you enter a common domain name!

Further, by clicking the Next button, you will be asked by Shopify to enter your seller specifications (selling product amount, previous selling history, etc.,).

After filling up the form click on the Enter My Store button.

You will be then auto-directed to a page that will give you an option to choose between building a physical store or an eCommerce website. Since this guide is about building an online store, choose that option and move further by clicking Next.

Next, you will be asked to provide your personal information like your name, address, phone number, etc. That way, Shopify will configure your currency and tax rates.

Step 2: Add Your Product

If you have ever worked with an eCommerce development company, you must be aware of the fact that your product is the lifeline of your webstore. It simply cannot function without it. After signing up on Shopify, you will be automatically directed towards the admin display of your new webpage (yes, we know, exciting it is!). Now is the stage to customize your webpage. Start by uploading photos for your customers to see.   When you are working on Shopify development, it runs a thorough step-by-step guide on the backend to let you finish the setup easily. See the Add a Product button next? Click on it.

The page that pops up is very much similar to the WordPress interface. You will be required to enter details about the product (title, vendor, pricing, description, etc.). Just don’t forget to press the Save button after you are done.

Pro Tip: Your customers are going to decide which products to buy based on the photos that you upload on your webstore. Keep in mind the statistics like the target audience, their age group, style preferences, etc. This will double-fold your chances of reaching the right people to sell.  Remember: People believe what they see!

You can also customize your webstore to arrange your products according to your requirements. This makes it quite easy for your customers to search for their desired products. You can add search specifications to your store. For example, if your web store sells men’s clothes, you can categorize your collection by age group.

Step 3: Customize the Interface of Your Shopify Webstore

Easy here! You are already done with the basics of your Shopify webstore. Now all you need to do is to decorate your store as per your taste and needs. Bring out the artist in you and click to go back to the main dashboard. Here, you can customize anything, colours on your webstore interface, your logo, your store theme, product categorizing, etc.

This part requires you to be a bit more technical, but don’t worry, even the world’s best eCommerce designers face this. The solution? Click on Visit the Theme Store to see hundreds of themes to select from (awesome, no?).

Free themes are fun to work with, but if you want to invest a bit into the outlook of your webstore (which you should, by the way), you can select from Shopify premium themes too. With just a bit of extra payment, you can even modify minute details on your webstore, and make it look like exactly you want it to. HTML and CSS access offer you lots of modification options.

Not a coding expert? No worries. You can always visit the Shopify development webpage to connect to Shopify Experts (a little help never hurts, does it?). Those experts are field specialists, so they know more about how to handle stuff like themes, marketing strategies, product details, and much more.

What Can You Change Through Shopify Theme?

Here is a quick list of things that you can modify using the Shopify theme.

  • Products on your webstore page
  • Colour customization
  • Fonts
  • Logo interface
  • Product search categorization
  • Page interface

Step 4: Domain Setup

Now that your website looks like you want it to, it is the time for another important aspect of your webstore: Select a domain. Yes! Your website is going to be officially live soon! Simply go to your dashboard and click Add a Domain. You can choose from options of transferring a domain or registering for a new one. Select a domain you like, and follow steps to purchase it. Here, you will have to choose your Shopify payment option too.

On the Shopify development page, you can purchase a domain, or add one to your store from any other store. Just don’t forget to update your DNS records in case you choose to upload an existing domain name.

Once activated, you can visit the domain and check your website!

Step 5: Shopify Store Checklist

On Shopify’s main page, check and tick these crucial parts off your checklist.

  • General Information

Check the Settings area to see if all your essential information is filled in. This includes your billing information and your legal details too.

  • Tax Details

Go to the Variants section and tick the Charge Taxes box. This will assist you with your accounting details.

  • Shipping Technicalities

Choose a product that requires extra shipping and postage costs to be added to its total price and click Requires Shipping. Be more specific about your requirements: you can either choose weight-based or distance-based shipping criteria.

  • Check All Set

Time to give your website’s ordering system a test drive! Give it a go because you don’t want to have a mess when your actual customers start clicking. Go to Admin, then click on Settings, then choose Payment Settings. From there, deactivate, select a credit card option to check. You can also click Bonus Gateway to check to see how ordering a product from your page would appear to a real customer.

Step 6: Payment Processor Activation

Kudos! You are almost there! Go to the dashboard settings and click Payments. This section lists lots of payment options to choose from, such as, Stripe, etc. Shopify development has a payment processor of its own too. You can activate it by following some simple steps. This will enable you to accept payments in your account directly.

Payment Gateways

You cannot run a successful eCommerce store, not even through the Shopify eCommerce development company if you ignore the importance of payment gateways. There are a lot of factors to look for in a suitable payment gateway for you, such as:

Card type: Choose a gateway that accepts the widest range of card types. Also, it should accept a variety of options for payment, such as PayPal, Stripe, etc.

Transaction Fee: Payment gateways charge an amount every time a purchase is done on your website. Go for the lowest price (this one is obvious!) a payment gateway can charge.

Checkout (Offsite): Have you ever had to fill a form to make a purchase? Yes, that is how some payment gateways redirect payment towards another site. This option makes the payment process a bit more secure for the seller but is quite a hassle for the buyers (filling a form can be time-consuming!). You can also google Shopify Expert Near Me to find someone to help you with this.

Tada! All set. Now simply click on the Launch Website button. Yes! Your webstore is live now! Congratulations! Your Shopify webstore is now functional!
